On May 30, 2019, the White House released a statement from President Trump regarding emergency measures to address the border crisis with Mexico.

To address the emergency at the Southern Border, President Trump invoked the authorities granted to him by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and created a plan to impose and gradually increase a Tariff on all goods imported from Mexico.

If the illegal migration crisis is alleviated through effective actions by Mexico, the Tariffs will be removed. If the crisis persists, President Trump intends to increase the Tariffs to:

– 10 percent on July 1, 2019

– 15 percent on August 1, 2019

– 20 percent on September 1, 2019

– 25 percent on October 1, 2019

President Trump believes that high Tariffs may cause companies located in Mexico to move back to the United States to make their products and goods. He expects that this will produce a massive return of jobs back to American cities and towns.
