Do I need a valid passport when applying for citizenship?
By: Dayna Lally, Esq.[1]
No, you do not need a valid passport to apply for citizenship.
What Evidence is Required to Apply for Citizenship?
When applying for citizenship, you only need to submit photocopies of the following documents:
- Permanent Resident Card (front and back); and
- Current Legal Marital Status Document (marriage certificate, divorce decree, death certificate, etc.).
Overseas Applicants
Applicants who reside overseas must provide two identical passport-style photographs of themselves.
Documents for Military Personnel
Current members of the U.S. Armed Forces are required to provide a completed and certified Form N-426, Request for Certification of Military or Naval Service. Additionally, individuals currently serving in an active duty status within the United States or abroad, should submit a photocopy of their official military orders.
Former members of the U.S. Armed Forces are required to provide a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD Form 214), for all active periods of service.
What Evidence do I Need to Bring to the Citizenship Interview
Although only a few documents are required to be submitted when applying for U.S. citizenship, you must bring several more documents to your N-400 interview with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”).
Which documents are needed for the citizenship interview depends on whether you filed as the spouse of a U.S. citizen (3 years after obtaining a green card), or under the general naturalization provision (5 years after obtaining a green card).
